Information about Chad

Area: 1,284,000 sq. km (496,000 sq. miles)

Population: 11.2 million (2010 World Bank est.

Capital City: N’Djamena (population 700,000 est.

People and languages: The population of Chad is made up of 200 ethnic groups. The official languages are French and Arabic but local languages are widely used

Religions: Islam is predominate in the north and, Christianity, Animism and indigenous beliefs are all practiced in the south

Currency: CFA Franc (Fixed to Euro

Head of State: President Lt. Gen Idriss Deby Itno (re-elected in 2011

Chad is a resource-poor, landlocked country, bordered by the Sudan, the Central African Republic, Cameroon, Nigeria, Niger, and Libya. Chad is mostly desert in the north and then progresses to semi desert to savannah in the south.

Like Sudan and Nigeria the country is divided equally between  Muslims in the north and Christians, animist and others to the south.
